~Free Technical Theatre Workshops~ These will be lead by the theatre’s Technical Director, Mark Robley Johnson, and will provide vocational skills that will transfer to experience in technical theatre in high school and college.

5. Considering the budget cuts, how does The Youth Performing Arts Center impact the arts experiences of our students?
With the completion of the Marjorie Luke Theatre, students from throughout the greater Santa Barbara area will have a state-of-the-art, accessible, kid-friendly performing arts venue in which to gain valuable performing and technical arts experiences.
In addition to use by students at SBJHS, the new theatre is available for all music, dance, theatre and visual arts organizations serving youth in our community. Concerts, recitals, classes, workshops and productions will be held in this beautiful facility, involving students of all ages.
6. Just what were the funding sources for this renovation?
1. Measure V Bond Funds - from Santa Barbara voter approved bond passed in 1999 to support ONLY capital improvements in secondary schools. These bond funds cannot be used for operating, staffing or programming costs in the schools. The Bond funds are dedicated to capital improvements; are not state funds; and are not affected by state cut backs.
2. Private funds raised by CYPAC from individual donors, foundations and businesses Approximately $1.6 million has been raised in private dollars.
3. $95,000 in State Funds from last year’s state budget, was secured by Advisor/ Assemblywoman Hannah Beth Jackson. Additionally, a $100,000 federal grant was secured by our advisor, Congresswoman Lois Capps.
4. Over $200,000 in donated materials and services has been secured from Santa Barbara area businesses (tile, foyer furniture, tools, graphic services, printing, ironwork, engineering and design consulting).
7. Why can’t other local schools get private sector help to renovate facilities on their campuses?
THEY CAN! CYPAC is a group of dedicated individuals who chose to organize, incorporate, partner with the School District, raise considerable private funds, and create a long-term plan to manage and operate the Marjorie Luke Theatre for school and community use. CYPAC supports similar efforts and is happy to share its design with other interested community members. |
