Although The Marjorie Luke Theatre is not a producing organization and will not compete with existing production organizations, a number of unique programs will be offered to augment and compliment local youth arts programs.
Meeting the Masters
The Marjorie Luke Theatre will present an on-going mentoring series titled “Meeting The Masters.” This series will feature world-class artists including stage, television and film actors, directors, producers, writers, choreographers, dancers, designers, vocal and instrumental musicians. Our organization is honored to have numerous professional artists as members of our Advisors, some of whom are alumni of Santa Barbara schools and who have gone on to highly successful careers in the performing arts. These local professionals, as well as others from throughout the nation will present a variety of inspiring offerings in such formats as open dialogues, workshops and master classes. We hope to inspire young people with these professional role models and educate students about the realities of becoming professional artists.
This series was kicked off with a Jazz Master Class with world-renowned musician Arturo Sandoval who worked with members of the UCSB Jazz Ensemble. This event was co-sponsored by our partners: UCSB Arts and Lectures and the SAGE committe of the Santa Barbara Bowl. Both these outstanding arts presenters will work closely with the Marjorie Luke Theatre to secure artists touring to Santa Barbara to participate in this rich youth outreach series. Artists who have agreed to participate in this series include: actor Anthony Edwards, comedienne Carol Burnett, broadway star Savion Glover, screen writers Jeff Arch and Peter Seaman, musician Glen Phillips, and many more...
Free technical theatre workshops will be offered for students and adults in the community to be trained in technical theatre skills and operations of the equipment in the Theatre. Th ese workshops will be open to the public and promoted in all the area schools through the support of our partner, the Santa Barbara High School District. The workshops will train young people in all areas of stage craft including safety, terminology, sound, lights, and rigging. The Theatre's state-of-the-art equipment and its technical theatre training workshops will help nurture and inspire young people who are considering possible careers in technical theatre, design arts, television and film production.
Hands-on experience with the new technical equipment in the Marjorie Luke Theatre will be a valuable resource for young people who continue their work at Santa Barbara City College or UCSB. Technical theatre skills are valuable for young people interested in obtaining work in this specialized field. Guest theatrical designers from area theatres, UCSB and Santa Barbara City College will be invited to participate and present in the Technical Theatre Workshops.
The Marjorie Luke Theatre is partnering with the South Coast Community Media Access Center (CMAC). As a part of this partnership, three permanent camera locations will be established in the Theatre complete with built-in cabling to a switching station in the technical control booth. Professional cameras and production equipment, under the supervision of CMAC personnel, will be available for use by community organizations renting the Theatre. With cooperation from CMAC, presentations in the Marjorie Luke Theatre may be taped and aired on the cable community access channel. CMAC staff will be available to train community members to use this equipment and will oversee television and video elements of the Theatre. |
